The Story of The White Possum Grille.... During the Prohibition era, Somewhere between 1920-1933, there was a man by the name of Sheal Malone. Mr. Malone was the kind of man that seemed to be good at everything he tackled, He was a good farmer, kept his family fed, a good musician, once invited to play at the Grand Ole Opry, but declined as he was “too backward to play on stage”, and good brewer, the latter of which was made illegal in the Eighteenth Amendement, ratified on January 16, 1919. As part of this Amendment (Vostead Act) The manufacture, transportation, and/or sell of any spirit was made illegal, but Mr. Malone was a sharp man, and To ease his odds of getting caught, he would often send his two young sons, Clyde and J.C. on delivery runs and collections, on the count that “young’uns” if caught, were set loose. For years Mr. malone bootlegged Middle Tennessee, and for years people came from all around to get a taste of his one of a kind “Shine”, but all that was about to change. Mr. Malone, at the time was not born again through Christ, and he was bad superstitious. One day while he was on a delivery run, and he saw something white skurrying across the old dirt road in front of him, he looked closer and saw it was an old “omen of doom”, a White Possum. Well, that did it for him, his superstitous ways made him “cold-turkey” quit the moonshine business. They say his steal is still hidden down deep in the woods somewhere in Dowelltown.
